Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker has the impossible task of concluding a story that already ended not once, but twice, with the eight movies that came before in the Star Wars franchise. Confusing, I know.
But the sequel trilogy which began in 2015 is what is really ending here.
Director JJ Abrams takes these characters he created back in Episode VII The Force Awakens — namely Rey, Finn, Poe, and Kylo Ren — and gives them a finale that rushes, retcons, and overwhelms. Sometimes the story feels thin. Without substance, without heart. Sometimes it’s hard to hold onto the plot because it’s trying to do much at once. Rise Of Skywalker lacks the strong structure and crafted character arcs of The Last Jedi. This entry is a little more soapy, and a lot more pandering.
But it has grandeur. Cool lightsaber fights. Big reveals. Breath-stealing moments. And a beautiful, beautiful score. Composer John Williams is the real hero here.
The big question though, is did this film stick the landing? Did it end the entire Skywalker Saga well?
My answer is no. No it did not. But maybe it works for you. I hope it does.
My final rating for Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker is a half-empty cup of blue milk out of 10.
